Saint Louis, Patron of Evreux


Evreux today celebrates the Great King St. Louis IX (1214-1270), one of the benefactors of the city. In October 1259, he came to the abbey of St. Taurin, then led by Abbot Gilbert of St. Martin, on the occasion of the coronation of Raoul Grosparmi, appointed bishop of Evreux. Then he installed the Jacobins, who, grateful, were the first religious of France to devote a church after her canonization in 1297. It is one of the bosses side of the diocese. A Street and the municipal cemetery bearing his name, a chapel in the cathedral dedicated to him. This festival is also an opportunity to commemorate the liberation of Evreux, 22 and 23 August 1944, after four years of occupation by the National Socialist German troops.
